Quasquicentennial - Pronunciation: (kwos"kwi-sen-ten'E-ul),
--adj. pertaining to or marking a period of 125 years. --n. 1. a 125th anniversary.
2. a celebration marking such an anniversary.
In 1879, town founders, James and William Fulton, John Stevens and C.J. Jones, had platted a new town but the Santa Fe Railroad would not recognize Garden City as a stop. There was already a town on railroad land a few miles west called Sherlock, now Holcomb. After considerable effort and persuasion, the railroad agreed to stop at Garden City after part of the town site was deeded to the Santa Fe Town Company. Thus were the humble beginnings of a village on the treeless plains of Southwest Kansas inhabited by buffalo, deer and huge herds of cattle driven up from Texas to fatten on the lush prairie grasses.
Now, nearly 125 years later we are working to commemorate our auspicious beginnings. The Chamber of Commerce will be part of a "Quasquicentennial or G-125" celebration committee that will work in partnership with other organizations to plan activities to be held throughout 2004. If you have any ideas for this celebration or would like more information, please contact WenDee LaPlant at the Chamber of Commerce, 620-276-3246, ext. 207.
The Quasquicentennial Committee is hoping for a huge turn out for the first ever All School Reunion. Please contact your classmates about the reunion which includes two homecoming football games at GCHS on Friday, September 24 and GCCC game on Saturday, September 25. There will be a dance, food court and other activities, including a Reunion/Homecoming parade on Saturday, September 25, that is currently being planned. A website is also available at USD 457 to sign up if you are planning on attending or just to include your name in a database if you are unable to attend. The information gathered will be invaluable in the future - both for the school system and the community at large.
We encourage all classes to contact each other and organize your own get-togethers with plans to attend the football games, dance and participate in the parade.
