
John and Mary Dogood have made an annual leadership gift ($1,000 and above) to United Way for many years. They are planning for retirement and formulating some financial plans for the future. They want to provide for the community care agenda as well as their familys needs long after they are gone. John and Mary decided to endow their annual gift.
They could make an outright gift to the United Way in the amount of $20,000 or they could make a provision for such a gift in their wills.
In general, it takes a commitment of 20 times their annual gift to endow an annual gift. A portion of the endowed gift earnings will be spent every year as part of their annual gift to the community fund and a portion will be reinvested so that the endowment gift principal grows over time.
