United Way Day of Action is an opportunity for communities to come together and address the issues that matter most to them. For some, it’s filling backpacks with books to encourage reading and improve early literacy. For others, it’s planting community gardens to foster civic pride and promote affordable, healthy eating. In that sense, Day of Action mirrors the work that United Way does year-round: empowering people to affect positive change in their own backyards.
This year the Finney County United Way would again like to ask for your help to fill red wagons with new or gently used children’s books. Cash donations are welcome as well. This will take place during the month of June with the United Way collecting the books on June 21st. The books will then be distributed locally to daycares, early childhood centers, summer playground programs and to newborn babies at St. Catherine Hospital through our Books for Babies Program (books for newborns will need to be new).
When children and youth can start school ready to succeed, become proficient readers at a young age, stay on track in middle school, earn their high school diploma and pursue a higher education, the community as a whole benefits.
If you would like to participate in the Little Red Wagon-Books for Kids Project by placing a red wagon in your place of business from June 1-21 please mail or email firstname.lastname@example.org. We will provide wagons if you don’t have one available along with signs to post on the wagons. We would ask, if at all possible, for you to get the word out to your employees and customers. And please use your creativity in any way to make this a success. The Finney County United Way will advertise through social media and other venues.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at any time. Your help with this project will be most greatly appreciated!
